A beach in the sky! A comprehensive introduction to the stunning views and mountain climbing of Mt. Hyuga

The view from Gangahara

Hello, this is Pension Bell!
This time, we will introduce you to Mt. Hinata, which is located in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, at an altitude of 1,660m. We will introduce you to all the attractions of the mountain, from hiking trails that are easy for beginners to observation spots with spectacular views, and fun things to do after the hike.

What are the characteristics of Hyugayama?

Mt. Hinata is located on a ridge that branches off from Mt. Kaikoma in the Akaishi Mountains, and its altitude is 1,660m. There is a triangulation point near the summit, but it is surrounded by trees and there is not much of a view.

However, the true charm of Mt. Hinata is in Gangahara, which spreads out on the west side of the summit. This is a white gravel field with exposed granite, and the white floor is like fantasy sand, also known as the “beach in the sky.” From there, you can see the Yatsugatake mountain range, Mt. Kaikoma, and even the vast panorama of Hokuto.

The granite landscape seen from Karasuhara is a unique work of art created by nature. The earth, worn down by wind and rain over many years, has beautifully shaped the rocks. This form cannot be created by man-made means. It gives a sense of the grandeur and mystery of nature.

Recommended for beginners! Hiking route to Mt. Hinata

The hiking trails on Mt. Hinatayama are designed to be beginner-friendly. The starting point is the Ojirogawa Valley Parking Lot (free, can accommodate approximately 100 cars). From here, it is about an hour’s walk to the Yatateishi trailhead. Starting from the trailhead, you will reach the summit in approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. After that, if you continue further, the forest will open up and you will arrive at Karagahara.

Climbing route overview

  • Ojirogawa Valley Parking Lot → (1 hour walk) → Yatateishi Trailhead
  • Yatateishi trailhead → (1 hour 30 minutes walk) → Summit (triangulation point)
  • Summit → (5 min walk) → Karasuhara

The hiking trail is relatively well maintained and there are no dangerous sections. In the autumn foliage season, you can enjoy walking among the colorful trees.

Points to note
Karasuhara has a lot of slippery gravel, so you need to watch your step. Also, it is quite high, so be careful not to drop anything. It is recommended to choose a stable place to take a break.

After enjoying the spectacular views, refresh yourself with gourmet food and hot springs!

After descending the mountain, be sure to stop by Kamoshika Shokudo at the roadside station “Hakushu.” We recommend the hearty katsu curry, which will blow away the fatigue of your climb. Normally 1,400 yen, it was only 1,200 yen during the campaign. A large portion is also available, so it’s the perfect reward after descending the mountain!

There is also a hot spring nearby, perfect for refreshing after a hike. Why not relax and rejuvenate yourself while planning your next mountain climb?
